Playing against his former team, Ali Jennings caught two of Grant Wells' three touchdown passes as Virginia Tech avenged a season-opening loss from a year ago by defeating Old Dominion 36-17 on Saturday night in Blacksburg, Va.

Jennings switched teams through the transfer portal after last season. He had five catches for 72 yards on Saturday.

Jaylin Lane, a transfer from Middle Tennessee, also caught a touchdown pass for the Hokies (1-0).

Wells, who also ran for a touchdown, went 17-for-29 passing for 251 yards.

Old Dominion quarterback Grant Wilson was 13-for-25 for 94 yards with two TDs and an interception. He also gained 81 yards on 19 carries. The Monarchs (0-1), who managed 295 yards of total offense, had three turnovers.

Both teams had three wins last season.

Wilson's 5-yard pass to Keshawn Wicks allowed the Monarchs to close within 23-17 in the third quarter. Virginia Tech responded by going 65 yards in eight plays for a touchdown on Wells' 1-yard run.

The only points in the fourth quarter came on field goals of 27 and 21 yards from Virginia Tech's John Love.

Virginia Tech's Bhayshul Tuten, a transfer from North Carolina A&T, was the team's top rusher with 55 yards on 19 carries.

The Hokies held a 16-10 halftime lead, with Old Dominion closing the gap on Ethan Sanchez's 28-yard field goal on the last play of the second quarter.

Virginia Tech led 2-0 after the first quarter, courtesy of a wayward snap in punt formation by the Monarchs. The Hokies held a 73-0 edge in total offense in the quarter.

Wells threw 20 yards to Lane for the game's first touchdown, as the Hokies went 55 yards in 10 plays.

Old Dominion got on the board with Wilson's 16-yard scoring strike to Dominic Dutton with 9:34 left in the first half.

Wells and Jennings hooked up for a 10-yard touchdown play with 2:10 left in the half, but that was enough time for the Monarchs to score again.
