Redshirt freshman Billy Edwards Jr. relieved injured quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and scampered in for what would be the game-winning touchdown as Maryland staved off host Indiana 38-33 on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.
Roman Hemby ran for 107 yards and a touchdown as Maryland (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) handed Indiana (3-4, 1-3) its fourth straight loss.
With roughly 12 minutes to play, Tagovailoa went down in obvious pain when an Indiana defender fell into his right knee. He was carted to the locker room and Edwards entered the game.
On his first full drive, Edwards had a 31-yard run up the middle to bring Maryland into the red zone. Hemby scored from 6 yards out to give the Terrapins a 31-27 lead with 5:35 remaining.
Indiana took over near midfield thanks to a big kick return, but receiver Andison Coby had the ball pop out after gaining a first down and the Terrapins recovered. Hemby broke off a 46-yard run on third-and-9 to the Indiana 15, and Edwards scored from 3 yards out to make it 38-27 with 2:11 to go.
Indiana quarterback Connor Bazelak benefited from two consecutive passes that were caught after Maryland deflections as the Hoosiers went 75 yards in just 1:17. He hit Aaron Steinfeldt for an 8-yard touchdown, but the two-point conversion was overthrown and the Terrapins recovered an onside kick attempt.
Tagovailoa completed 25 of 39 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns along with a rushing score on Maryland's first drive. Edwards did not complete a pass but gained 53 yards on five carries.
Bazelak went 29 for 42 for 292 yards, three touchdowns and two picks. Running back Josh Henderson scored two touchdowns with 80 yards from scrimmage.
Maryland led 14-3 when tight end CJ Dippre flipped over a defender at the goal line for an 18-yard touchdown to open the second quarter. But the Hoosiers clawed back with two touchdown drives for a 17-14 halftime lead.
First, Bazelak found a wide-open Henderson for a 44-yard strike with 9:52 left in the half. The Hoosiers got the ball back and drove 80 yards in 11 plays, aided by a defensive holding flag on the Terps during an Indiana punt. Bazelak hit Cam Camper in the corner for the go-ahead touchdown with 1:47 before halftime.
Maryland scored 10 quick points after the break. Tagovailoa connected with Dontay Demus for a 17-yard touchdown just 1:37 into the half. Then Deonte Banks intercepted Bazelak on Indiana's first play on offense, and Maryland drove to a 36-yard field goal that made it 24-17.
A 17-play, 57-yard drive for Indiana yielded a 26-yard field goal, but the Hoosiers recaptured the lead on their next possession. Henderson pushed in from 2 yards out to make it 27-24 with 14:09 left.
