Maryland used big plays on offense, defense and special teams to snap a two-game skid and spoil the debut of Rutgers interim coach Nunzio Campanile in a 48-7 road win Saturday at Piscataway, N.J.

The Terrapins (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) had four scoring plays of at least 40 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown pass from Josh Jackson to Dontay Demus on their first offensive snap. Javon Leake scored on a 100-yard kickoff return to start the second half, and Anthony McFarland Jr. went on an 80-yard TD run on Maryland's first offensive snap of the third quarter.

Maryland had managed only 17 points in its previous two games, including a 59-0 home loss to Penn State in its last outing.

Leake had 190 all-purpose yards with three scores -- including a 42-yard run. McFarland ran for two scores, and Jackson threw for 179 yards and two TDs before leaving the game late in the second quarter with an apparent right leg injury.

The Terps led 27-7 at halftime, with all four of their scoring drives lasting three or fewer plays. A 2-yard TD run by McFarland with 5:36 left in the first half came immediately after Ayinde Eley picked off a Rutgers pass and returned it 39 yards, the 17th consecutive game in which Maryland recorded at least one takeaway.

Rutgers (1-4, 0-3) was playing its first game since firing Chris Ash on Sunday, a day after the Scarlet Knights were thumped 52-0 at Michigan for their second consecutive shutout loss in Big Ten play. Ash went 8-32 in three-plus seasons, going 3-26 league play.

Campanile, a former standout high school coach in New Jersey who had been Rutgers' tight ends coach, had to turn to redshirt freshman Johnny Langan at quarterback after sophomore Artur Sitkowski reportedly asked to sit out in hopes of redshirting. Also missing the game for reportedly the same reason was junior Raheem Blackshear, the Knights' leading receiver and second-leading rusher.

Langan -- Campanile's quarterback at Bergen Catholic High School in 2017 -- threw for 163 yards and ran for 59 with a TD. His 3-yard run with 9:37 left in the second quarter, which tied the game at 7, snapped a 148-minute scoreless streak for Rutgers in league contests, dating to the fourth quarter of a 14-10 loss at Michigan State last November.
