Stevie Scott rushed for 204 yards and a touchdown and Indiana held on to defeat Virginia, 20-16, on Saturday night in Bloomington, Ind.
Scott carried 31 times and scored the Hoosiers' first touchdown on a 40-yard first quarter run.
The Hoosiers were balanced on offense as Peyton Ramsey added two touchdown passes. He completed 16-of-22 passes for 150 yards, including scoring passes to Donavan Hale and Nick Westbrook.
Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins also threw two touchdown passes as he completed 12-of-24 for 106 yards. He also rushed for 123 yards on 25 carries.
The Hoosiers improved to 2-0 and the Cavaliers fell to 1-1.
The closeness of the game was demonstrated by the time of possession as Virginia had the ball for just 48 seconds more than Indiana and the defensive nature of the game was demonstrated by the final yardage totals. Indiana had 387 yards and Virginia had 294.
Indiana led 20-9 at halftime, but Perkins threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Chris Sharp to pull Virginia within 20-16 midway through the third quarter.
The score stayed that way into the fourth quarter. The Hoosiers drove into Cavaliers territory, looking for a clinching score late in the fourth quarter, but stalled at the 37.
After a punt, Virginia took over at its 9 with 3:29 left. Perkins converted a third down and a fourth down as he drove the Cavaliers to the Hoosiers 31
On a fourth-and-5 with 16 seconds left, Virginia converted on a defensive pass interference penalty, but on the next play Perkins' pass fell incomplete as time ran out.
Virginia took an early 7-0 lead when Perkins threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Olamide Zaccheaus.
Indiana scored back-to-back touchdowns on Scott's 40-yard run and a 9-yard pass from Ramsey to Hale to take a 13-7 lead. The extra point was blocked and Juan Thornhill returned the ball for a defensive PAT, pulling the Cavaliers within 13-9.
The Hoosiers increased the lead to 20-9 at halftime after Ramsey threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Westbrook.
