Eastern Michigan relied on three field goals from sophomore Paulie Fricano to turn back Rutgers, 16-13, at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway, N.J., on Saturday.
Fricano's third field goal of the game, a 24-yarder, proved to be the game-winner, snapping a 13-13 tie with 10:13 to play. His 21-yard field goal tied it 13-13 with 30 seconds left in the third quarter.
Rutgers (0-2) was in field goal territory to potentially tie the game with 3:00 left to play, but Brody Hoying intercepted a Kyle Bolin pass and returned it 71 yards to the Rutgers 5-yard line. Fricano's field goal attempt was blocked.
The Scarlet Knights drove as far as the Eagles 25, but Bolin was sacked as time expired.
