Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush accounted for three touchdowns, and Josh Adams had big day on the ground, as the unranked Fighting Irish looked impressive in a 49-16 rout of Temple on Saturday at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind.

Wimbush threw touchdown passes to Nic Wish and Equanimeous St. Brown and ran for a touchdown to lead Notre Dame to an opening win. Wimbush finished 17 of 30 for 184 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Notre Dame rushed for 422 yards and five touchdowns. Adams finished with 161 yards and two touchdowns. He was one of three players to rush for over 100 yards, as Dexter Williams had 124 yards, and Wimbush had 106 on the ground.

Temple quarterback Logan Marchi threw a pair of touchdown passes, but the Owls couldn't keep up with the Irish and lost in the debut of new coach Geoff Collins.

It took the Irish just two plays to get on the board. On Notre Dame's opening drive, Wimbush completed a 33-yard pass to St. Brown, and then Adams raced in from 37 yards out to give Notre Dame a 7-0 lead 30 seconds into the game.

All three of Wimbush's touchdowns came in the first half, leading Notre Dame out to a 28-3 lead early in the second quarter.

Marchi threw a touchdown pass to Keith Kirkwood to help the Owls cut the Irish lead to 28-10 at halftime.

Notre Dame running back Tony Jones Jr. had a touchdown run in the third quarter, and Adams sealed the win with his second touchdown run with 5:44 left in the fourth quarter.

Notre Dame went 4-8 last season, which put the heat on coach Brian Kelly to turn things around in South Bend. The Irish start the season unranked, just like they did in 2012, when Notre Dame put together an undefeated regular season and reached the national championship game.

The Owls went 10-4 last season, but coach Matt Rhule departed to take the Baylor job in the offseason.
