Virginia survived a late scare from Duke to claim their third Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season with a 42-34 win over the Blue Devils on Saturday at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers took a 35-13 lead early in the second half after junior running back Taquan Mizzell scored from 10 yards, but the Blue Devils (6-5, 3-4) never went away.
Duke reeled off three second-half touchdowns to get within eight but failed on fourth down late in the fourth quarter to seal the win for Virginia (4-7, 3-4).
Quarterback Matt Johns led the Cavaliers, completing 24 of 33 passes for 344 yards and two touchdowns. Virginia racked up a season-high 502 yards as Johns connected with 11 different receivers.
Wide receiver T.J. Rahming caught 12 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown to pace the Duke offense.
Virginia scored the first three touchdowns of the game and led 21-0 late in the second quarter after a Mizzell rushing touchdown. Duke junior DeVon Edwards returned a kick 94 yards for a touchdown to put the Blue Devils on the scoreboard just before halftime.
