No. 5 Baylor 38, No. 9 Kansas State 27: Bryce Petty threw for 412 yards and accounted for two touchdowns as the Bears clinched a share of the Big 12 title.
Petty finished 34-of-40 with a score through the air and added a short TD run for Baylor (11-1, 8-1 Big 12), which finished in a tie atop the conference with TCU. Antwan Goodley scored on a 58-yard third-quarter catch and matched a season high with nine receptions for 116 yards as the Bears – ranked sixth in the College Football Playoff rankings – await their postseason fate when the four-team national playoff field is announced Sunday.
Jake Waters, who went 22-of-27 for 300 yards and two touchdowns, also ran for 31 yards on 20 carries to break Michael Bishop’s single-season total-yardage mark at 3,633, but threw a late interception as Kansas State (9-3, 7-2) was attempting a comeback. Tyler Lockett set a career high with 14 catches for 158 yards and a score for the Wildcats.
Baylor rolled to a 14-0 lead after one quarter behind a pair of 1-yard runs from Petty and Shock Linwood before Charles Jones powered his way into the end zone from a yard out to cut the deficit to 14-7 with 10:47 left in the first half. Kansas State answered behind a 2-yard TD run from Johnny Jefferson and Waters found a wide-open Zach Trujillo for a 36-yard score, but Chris Callahan nailed a 46-yard field goal right before the break.
The Wildcats managed to drive deep into Bears territory on their first two possessions of the second half, but settled for field goals both times and Baylor took advantage as Petty hit Goodley in stride down the right sideline and Jefferson ran it in from 3 yards out. Lockett rallied the Wildcats on a 8-yard TD catch with 12:41 left and kept Kansas State’s slim hopes alive with a 20-yard grab on third-and-15 later in the quarter, but Xavien Howard intercepted Waters on the next play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Bears have won 16 straight home games, tying Alabama for the longest such streak in the nation. … Lockett, who set school career marks for receptions in last week’s win over Kansas and receiving yards in Kansas State’s previous victory over West Virginia, broke the final of his dad Kevin's records with his 27th career touchdown catch in the fourth quarter. … Wildcats DB Dylan Schellenberg was carted off the field near the end of the first quarter and taken away in an ambulance shortly thereafter after suffering a serious left leg injury one play before Linwood’s TD run.
