Texas Tech 20, No. 24 Texas Christian 10: Backup quarterback Davis Webb hit Bradley Marquez for the go-ahead touchdown during a bizarre fourth quarter as the host Red Raiders downed the Horned Frogs in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams.
Webb, who threw for all 77 of his yards on the pivotal fourth-quarter drive for Texas Tech (3-0, 1-0 Big 12), took over with about six minutes left after starter Baker Mayfield left the game due to an apparent left leg injury. Webb appeared to connect with DeAndre Washington for a 49-yard touchdown to break a 10-10 tie, but the score was taken away when replays showed that Washington dropped the ball prior to crossing the goal line.
Officials ruled the play over, resulting in the ball being placed at the 1-yard line prior to an unsportsmanlike conduct foul, which pushed it back to the TCU 16. Three plays later, Webb found Marquez in the back of the end zone for a 19-yard TD.
Trevone Boykin, who took over for an injured Casey Pachall in last week’s win over Southeastern Louisiana, threw for 194 yards and added a career-high 101 on the ground. B.J. Catalon scored the only touchdown for the Horned Frogs (1-2, 0-1), who also were upset at home by Texas Tech 56-53 in triple overtime last season.
TCU trailed 10-0 at the half but got on the board with a field goal midway through the third quarter, and Brandon Carter appeared to tie the game on a 69-yard punt return early in the fourth. The play was brought back after officials ruled he gave an invalid fair-catch signal, but Catalon made it a moot point when he scored from 17 yards out nine plays later to tie the game with 6:28 left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kenny Williams opened the scoring with a 50-yard TD reception, becoming the first Texas Tech running back with a touchdown catch of at least 50 yards since Harrison Jeffers scored on a 62-yard reception in 2009 against New Mexico. … TCU fell to 24-6 in road and neutral-site games since 2009. … The Red Raiders dropped each of their previous three conference home openers, all to ranked opponents.
