MarQuies Gray totaled 260 yards of offense and was responsible for three touchdowns, leading Minnesota to a 27-7 win over Illinois at TCF Bank Stadium.
Minnesota (3-9, 2-6 Big Ten) leads the all-time series with the Fighting Illini 33-28-3 and has won nine of the last 12 meetings between the conference foes.
Illinois (6-6, 2-6 Big Ten) lost its sixth straight game and may have put the nail in the coffin of head coach Ron Zook’s time in Champaign.
Gray threw for 88 yards and rushed for 172 others – breaking the school’s single season quarterback rushing mark, held by Billy Cochran, with 971 yards on the ground this year.
Illinois starter Nathan Scheelhaase struggled to move the football, giving way to freshman Riley O’Toole, who finally got the chains moving for the Illini. He finished with 61 yards passing. Illinois managed only 11 first downs.
