James Franklin and Kendial Lawrence each had a rushing touchdown, and Missouri’s defense completely shut down No. 20 Texas in a 17-5 upset victory on Saturday in Columbia, Mo.

The Tigers (5-5, 3-4 Big 12), in search of their seventh straight bowl berth, got a much-needed win and beat the Longhorns (6-3, 3-3 Big 12) for the first time since 1997.

Both of the rushing scores came in the first half, and then Missouri yielded no offensive points and minimal yardage in the second half on a windy day at Faurot Field. With 8:46 left in the second quarter, Franklin scored on a 2-yard quarterback keeper up the middle to put Mizzou on top 7-3. Four minutes later, Lawrence scampered 35 yards up the right sideline to extend the Tigers’ lead to 14-3.

Texas, which was coming off back-to-back 400-yard rushing games for the first time since 1977, got nothing going on the ground. Part of it could be credited to injury problems, but Missouri’s defense was also impressive.

Longhorns Malcolm Brown and Joe Bergeron both sat out with injuries, and speedster Foswhitt Whittaker went down with a knee injury in the first quarter.

Missouri also suffered a potentially devastating blow when Henry Josey — the Big 12’s leading rusher — was tackled awkwardly in the third quarter and carted off the field with a left knee injury.

Lawrence was great in Josey’s absence, though, running for 106 yards and adding a big 20-yard reception.

The Longhorns, who lost to Mizzou for just the second time in the last 17 meetings, went three-and-out on five of their first seven second-half drives.
