Mike Glennon and Bryan Underwood connected for a pair of touchdowns and David Amerson returned one of his two interceptions for a score as North Carolina State pulled away for a 28-14 win at Virginia on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolfpack (4-3, 1-2 ACC) trailed by a touchdown early before Glennon hit Tony Creecy for a 5-yard score with 5:20 left in the half. Following an Amerson interception, Glennon found Underwood for a 33-yard touchdown to put the visitors in front for good. Underwood broke free of a would-be tackler for a 79-yard score to make it 21-7 at the 2:26 mark of the third period.
Virginia (4-3, 1-2) immediately cut the deficit to seven on a 60-yard throw from David Watford to Tim Smith, but the Cavaliers were done in by three Watford interceptions. Amerson, who had two of those picks to bump his FBS-leading total to eight, returned the last one for a 12-yard score to seal the outcome with 6:08 to go in the fourth quarter.
Glennon threw two interceptions but finished with 231 yards passing, with 125 of those coming on his three completions to Underwood. James Washington helped the Wolfpack kill the clock on the ground in the final moments, finishing with 82 rushing yards on 25 carries.
The win capped a successful homecoming for N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien, who had served as an assistant at Virginia under George Welch from 1982 to 1996.
