Houston
quarterback Case Keenum threw six touchdown passes and became the NCAA all-time
total yardage leader as the No. 20 Cougars scored early and often en route to a
63-28 win over visiting Marshall in
a Conference USA matchup on Saturday.
It took Keenum and the Cougar offense just three plays to
ring up its first score, a 70-yard Keenum-to-Patrick Edwards touchdown pass to
give the Cougars a 7-0 lead with 13:52 to play in the first quarter.Marshall
(3-5, 2-2 C-USA) closed to within 35-21 with 9:43 to play in the third on
quarterback A.J. Graham’s 6-yard touchdown run, but Houston (7-0, 3-0 C-USA)
answered on its next possession with an 18-yard Keenum to Justin Johnson
touchdown pass and the offensive onslaught continued.
Keenum, needing 130
yards to break former Hawaii
star Timmy Chang’s career total yardage record (16,910 yards), reached the mark
midway through the first quarter.
Keenum had 295
yards passing and four touchdown passes, two to Michael
Hayes, in the half. Marshall got on
the board with 3:56 to play in the
first with a 1-yard pass from Graham to Aaron Dobson to tie the score at 7.
Keenum finished 24 of 28 for 376 yards. He has now thrown for at
least 300 yards
in 32 games during his career.
