E.J. Manuel threw one touchdown and ran for another and Florida State’s running game came alive in the second half of a 41-16 victory over visiting Maryland on Saturday.

Jermaine Thomas, freshman Devonta Freeman and Debrale Smiley all had touchdown runs for the Seminoles (4-3, 2-2 ACC), who ran for 200 yards in the second half en route to their fifth straight win over the Terrapins.

Florida State, which has won five straight and 20 of the 22 all-time meetings with Maryland (2-5, 1-3 ACC), improved to 11-0 at home vs. the Terrapins.

It was the first home game for Florida State since Manuel left the loss to top-ranked Oklahoma with a sprained AC joint in his non-throwing shoulder on Sept. 17. That was the first of three straight losses that knocked the Seminoles out of the Top 25.

Florida State finally looked like the top-five team it was projected to be in the preseason, albeit against a struggling Maryland team. The Terrapins, who started five freshmen on defense, have lost five of six.

More importantly, the Terrapins lost quarterback C.J. Brown. Brown was knocked out of the game early in the third quarter by a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit from Seminoles’ linebacker Nigel Bradham.

Brown, who ran for a school-record 162 yards last week, had minus five yards rushing on 10 carries before leaving. Benched starter Danny O’Brien replaced him and was 9-of-18 for 180 yards and a 5-yard touchdown run.
