No. 19 Michigan State spoiled 10th-ranked Michigan’s hopes of an unbeaten season, defeating the Wolverines 28-14 Saturday at Spartan Stadium.

Keshawn Martin had two second-half touchdown catches for the Spartans (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten), who beat Michigan (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) for the fourth consecutive season, the first time they’ve accomplished the feat since 1959-62.

Martin had to reach for the right pylon on both of his catches, a 10-yard score with 11:07 left in the third that gave Michigan State a 14-7 lead, and a 13-yard touchdown late in the quarter that stretched the lead to 14.

Michigan’s offense didn’t have an answer for the Spartans’ defense, which had allowed just five touchdowns in five games coming in. The Wolverines, helped by a fake field goal, scored on their first possession of the game, a 15-yard touchdown run by Denard Robinson.

But from there, the Wolverines couldn’t establish much of anything. They finished with a season-low 250 yards while converting on just 3-of-15 third downs and at one point punted on seven consecutive drives.

The Wolverines did pull within 21-14 on Roy Roundtree’s 34-yard touchdown catch with 9:49 left and twice had a chance for game-tying scores. However, Isaiah Lewis intercepted a Robinson pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown with 4:31 left to seal the victory.

Edwin Baker finished with 25 carries for 170 yards and a touchdown for the Spartans, who won despite a pair of turnovers and 13 penalties for 124 yards.

With the win, Michigan State took over sole possession of first place in the Legends Division and is the only team without a conference loss.

Robinson, who finished with a season-low 165 total yards, left late in the fourth quarter with an apparent torso injury.
