No. 13 Georgia Tech is off to its best start since 1990, after holding off Maryland 21-16 Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Tevin Washington had 109 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns and Orwin Smith added a rushing score for the Yellow Jackets, who defeated Maryland (2-3, 1-1 ACC) for the ninth time in 10 games at home.

But it didn’t come easy.

Georgia Tech (6-0, 3-0 ACC) took a 21-3 lead into the fourth quarter before Maryland came storming back behind backup quarterback C.J. Brown, who replaced an ineffective Danny O’Brien midway through the second quarter.

Brown had a 77-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth and Davin Meggett added a 1-yard TD run with 7:33 left to bring the Terrapins within five points after a missed two-point conversion.

After forcing a Georgia Tech punt, Maryland took over at its own 19-yard line with 4:11 left. However, the Terrapins marched just 27 yards on six plays before turning the ball over on downs near midfield.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 3-0 in the ACC for the first time since 2006, when they 9-5 and lost in the Gator Bowl.

Brown finished with just 36 yards passing on 17 attempts, but racked up 124 yards on the ground for the Terrapins, who lost for the third time in their last four games and fell to 6-14 in the all-time series.
