Dominique Terrell took a swing pass 27 yards for a touchdown in overtime and Virginia denied Idaho on a two-point conversion attempt after it scored in the extra session to survive an upset bid from the visiting Vandals 21-20 Saturday.
Terrell scored on a second-and-goal, catching a pass from David Watford and weaving his way into the end zone to break the tie.
Idaho (1-4) scored on a 23-yard pass from Brian Reader to Armauni Johnson in overtime but went for the win and was denied by the Virginia (3-2) defense.
The Cavs raced out to a 14-0 lead on the heels of a pair of touchdowns by Perry Jones. Virginia scored first on a 10-yard run by Jones and then quarterback Michael Rocco connected with Jones on a 6-yard scoring pass.
The Vandals closed the gap to 14-6 at the half with a pair of field goals by Trey Farquhar of 19 and 42 yards.
Virginia had a couple of chances to put the game away but Robert Randolph missed two field goals, the second coming with just over five minutes to play.
Idaho’s Justin Hernandez then blocked a punt and Dan Micheletti scooped it up and carried it into the end zone to tie the game at 14 to send it into overtime.
Virginia played without freshman running back Kevin Parks, who missed the game with an ankle injury.
