Southern California quarterback Matt Barkley rebounded from a poor showing with a record-setting performance Saturday and the Trojans outlasted Arizona 48-41 in Los Angeles.
Barkley broke Carson Palmer’s school record for passing yards with 468 while throwing four touchdown passes and rushing for another as Southern Cal (4-1, 2-1 Pac-12) was nearly unstoppable against the porous Arizona defense. The teams combined for 1,136 total yards.
Southern Cal took an early 17-0 lead as Arizona started slow for the fourth straight week. The Wildcats (1-4, 0-3 Pac-12) have been outscored 45-3 in the first quarter in the last four games.
T.J. McDonald intercepted Arizona quarterback Nick Foles twice in the first half, but Foles kept the Wildcats in the game by completing 41 of 53 passes to 12 different receivers for 425 yards and four touchdowns.
Robert Woods came within six yards of breaking the single-game receiving yard mark of 260 yards for the Trojans, who lost 43-22 to Arizona State last week.
Arizona scored 15 unanswered points in the third quarter to come within 34-27, but the Wildcats would get no closer. Arizona has lost nine consecutive games to FBS opponents.
