Johnny McEntee threw a pair of touchdown passes to lead Connecticut to a 17-3 victory in a defensive slugfest with host Buffalo on Saturday.

Nick Williams went over 100 yards receiving on just two catches and scored a touchdown for the Huskies (2-2), who will play Western Michigan next week before diving into Big East play at West Virginia on Oct. 8.

Connecticut has been shuffling three different quarterbacks this season but has given McEntee the bulk of the passing attempts. The junior from California threw his first touchdown pass of the season late in the second quarter, giving the Huskies a 10-3 lead at the half when he found Mark Hinkley for a 4-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left before the break.

That score was set up by a 64-yard connection two plays earlier from McEntee to Williams.

Buffalo’s best chance to knot it at 10-10 came early in the third quarter, when an 11-play, 80-yard drive brought the Bulls (2-2) inside Connecticut’s 10-yard line. But Chazz Anderson’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Yawin Smallwood and returned out to the Huskies’ 26-yard line.

Connecticut put it away with 4:52 left when McEntee and Williams hooked up again, this time for a 49-yard touchdown.

The two schools combined for 16 punts.
