Richard Brehaut passed for one touchdown and rushed for another to lead UCLA to a 27-19 victory over host Oregon State in the Pac-12 opener for both teams on Saturday.
Jordan James and Anthony Barr added rushing touchdowns as the Bruins (2-2, 1-0) notched only their third conference road victory in 14 games during Rick Neuheisel’s four-year coaching tenure.
Oregon State (0-3, 0-1) is winless after three games for the first time since 1996.
The Beavers rallied from a 16-point deficit and trailed just 21-19 after Sean Mannion’s 45-yard passing touchdown to Jordan Bishop on the final play of the third quarter. The play was reviewed and still determined to be a touchdown even though replays showed Bishop’s feet landing out of bounds prior to diving to stretch the ball over the pylon.
Barr scored on a 1-yard run with 6:15 remaining to boost UCLA’s lead to eight.
Brehaut tossed a 22-yard scoring pass to Taylor Embree in the opening quarter and scored on a 5-yard run in the second to give UCLA a 14-3 advantage.
James scored on a 4-yard run one play after Mannion – a redshirt freshman making his first career start – had the ball slip out of hands while preparing to throw. UCLA’s Keenan Graham made the recovery.
Oregon State pulled within 21-10 on Jeff Poyer’s 85-yard punt return with 13 seconds left in the half.
The punt return score is the second longest in school history.
Beavers star receiver James Rodgers played for the first time since last October after two knee surgeries. Bruins leading rusher Johnathan Franklin didn’t play in the second half after injuring a hip in the second quarter.
