Quarterback Logan Thomas bounced back from a subpar performance, leading No. 12 Virginia Tech to a 26-7 home victory Saturday over Arkansas State.

Thomas completed just 43.6 percent of his passes in the first two games, including an 8-of-20, 91-yard performance last week against East Carolina. But the sophomore completed 21-of-33 passes for 293 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Red Wolves.

Thomas’ 49-yard touchdown to D.J. Coles with 5:30 left in the first quarter gave the Hokies (3-0) their first lead at 9-7. Thomas hit Danny Coale for a 4-yard touchdown with 52 seconds left in the quarter as Virginia Tech pushed its lead to 16-7.

Coale caught seven passes for 128 yards. David Wilson rushed 20 times for 85 yards and a touchdown.

The Red Wolves (1-2) took a 7-0 lead on Ryan Aplin’s 5-yard touchdown run three minutes into the game. Arkansas State wasted a 14-play drive late in the first half, with Brian Davis missing a 30-yard field goal.

Aplin completed 16-of-36 passes for 206 yards. Virginia Tech cornerback Jayron Hosley intercepted Aplin twice.

The Hokies play next Saturday at Marshall before opening Atlantic Coast Conference play Oct. 1 at home against Clemson. Arkansas State plays host to Central Arkansas next Saturday.
