Quarterback Sean Renfree dove in from 1 yard away on third down with 9:57 left in the game to give Duke the lead and the visiting Blue Devils held on for a 20-19 victory Saturday in the ACC opener for both teams.

Boston College kicker Nate Freese hit the left goal post from 23 yards out with 47 seconds to go as Duke (1-2) won an ACC opener on the road for the first time since 1981 against Virginia.

The Eagles dropped to 0-3 for the first time since 1991, Tom Coughlin’s first season as coach.

Renfree was 40-for-52 for 359 yards and two touchdowns.

The teams combined for just 56 yards rushing in the first half, but both quarterbacks racked up yardage. Boston College’s Chase Rettig had 182 yards passing and Renfree 208, including his first two scoring strikes of the season – both to Conner Vernon. Renfree connected with Vernon for a 24-yard score with 30 seconds left and the Blue Devils trailed 19-14 at the half.

Eagles’ linebacker Luke Kuechly had 23 tackles to extend his streak of games with double-digit tackles to an NCAA-best 25.

BC running back Montel Harris, the ACC preseason player of the year who had two knee surgeries over the last nine months, was held out again Saturday.
