Orwin Smith rushed for two touchdowns in the first nine minutes to spark a huge offensive performance as Georgia Tech overwhelmed Western Carolina 63-21 in the season opener Thursday in Atlanta.

Smith scored on runs of 5 and 77 yards for the Yellow Jackets, who scored their most points since a 69-14 victory over Samford in 2007.

Tevin Washington threw an 82-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Hill and Synjyn Days had a 7-yard touchdown run as Georgia Tech led 28-0 after one quarter.

The Yellow Jackets, who led 42-21 at halftime, finished with 662 yards of total offense, second-most in school history (706 against The Citadel in 1948).

Washington passed for a career-best 271 yards and three touchdowns, and Hill caught four passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns.

Brandon Pechloff passed for 180 yards and rushed for a touchdown for the Catamounts, who host Mars Hill on Sept. 10.

Isaiah Moore returned a blocked field goal attempt 69 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half for Western Carolina, which fell to 0-27 all-time against Atlantic Coast Conference teams.

Georgia Tech, which won its fifth consecutive season opener, plays at Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 10.
