Virginia used five interceptions to jump out to a 24-0 lead, then withstood a furious fourth-quarter rally and held on for a 24-19 win.

The win was the Cavaliers' first in ACC play this season and stopped a nine-game losing streak in conference play. No. 22 Miami (5-3, 3-2) had controlled its own destiny in chasing its first ACC championship, but now needs help to overtake Virginia Tech.

Virginia (4-4, 1-3) knocked quarterback Jacory Harris out of the game in the second quarter. He was taken to the hospital with a concussion.

Miami turned to Spencer Whipple and true freshman Stephen Morris, each of whom threw two interceptions. Corey Mosley grabbed the second of Morris’ miscues and returned it to the 5-yard line. On the next play, Keith Payne ran in for the touchdown, which gave Virginia a 24-0 lead with less than 12 minutes left in the game.

But Morris threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the span of six minutes to close the gap to 24-19. With all the momentum swinging toward Miami, Virginia quarterback Marc Verica completed two crucial third-down passes, enabling the Cavaliers, who ran out the clock.

Virginia had lost its three conference games by an average of 22 points. Miami had won four of its last five.

Payne led all rushers with 81 yards. Verica completed 19 of 27 passes for 176 yards.
