Maryland's Tony Logan returned a punt for a touchdown for the second consecutive game, and the Terrapins held off visiting Duke for a 21-16 victory in their ACC opener Saturday.
Logan, who entered the game with the nation's best punt return average at 25.2 yards per return, gave the Terrapins a 14-9 lead with an 84-yard punt return touchdown with 12:22 left in the third quarter. Logan scored on an 85-yard punt return in last week's win against Florida International.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Danny O'Brien started his second game for Maryland (4-1, 1-0 ACC) after earning ACC rookie of the week honors last week. O'Brien completed only 9-of-26 passes for 170 yards, but he connected with Da'Rel Scott for a 71-yard touchdown with 13:48 left in the game to provide a 21-9 lead.
Maryland's Davin Meggett rushed for 57 yards on 18 carries, including a 3-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Duke (1-4, 0-2 ACC) drove into Maryland territory with less than two minutes left, but Sean Renfree threw four consecutive incompletions and the Terrapins ran out the clock.
Renfree passed for 351 yards on 28-of-56 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions. Donovan Varner had eight catches for 128 yards for Duke, which has lost four consecutive games.
Duke led 9-7 at halftime on the strength of three Will Snyderwine field goals from 20, 40 and 34 yards.
