Robert Bolden passed and ran for touchdowns as No. 20 Penn State bounced back from a loss last week at top-ranked Alabama with a 24-0 win over visiting Kent State Saturday.
Bolden completed 17-of-27 passes for 216 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 32 yards and another score for the Nittany Lions (2-1), who had to overcome three turnovers. Bolden threw two interceptions, but his 48-yard touchdown pass to Devon Smith midway through the fourth quarter put the game away.
The Penn State defense was dominant, holding Kent State (1-2) to 227 yards, including only 58 on the ground.
The Nittany Lions scored on its first two possession for a 14-0 lead, but was less careful with the ball after that.
Bolden scored on a 1-yard run and Evan Royster went in from the 3 for Penn State’s fast start. But an interception and fumble near the end of the half, and an interception on their first possession of the second half kept the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard in the second quarter.
Penn State took a 17-0 lead near the end of the third quarter on Colin Wagner’s 27-yard field goal; then Bolden put the game away with his pass to Smith with 8:37 left in the game.
