The offensive reclamation project at Arizona State began in impression fashion Saturday night as the Sun Devils hammered Portland State 54-9 at Sun Devil Stadium.

After suffering through back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since 1947, Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson made a point of addressing the offense offseason and brought in Noel Mazzone and his no-huddle, multi-wide receiver formations.

The results were impressive even if they came against Portland State, a Football Championship Subdivision squad that is coming off three straight losing seasons.

Michigan transfer Steven Threet, making his first start since Nov. 1, 2008, was 14 of 22 for 240 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, which opened up the running lanes for sophomore Cameron Marshall, who ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns on four carries.

Arizona State's Deantre Lewis added three touchdowns (two receiving and one rushing) with three catches for 100 yards and five carries for 24 yards.

Overall, the Sun Devils, which led 30-6 at halftime, totaled 26 first downs and 553 yards to build confidence heading into next week’s matchup against Northern Arizona.

The Arizona State defense was the known quantity coming into the game and the Sun Devils didn’t disappoint, limiting the Vikings to just three field goals by Zach Brown and 254 total yards for Portland State.
