Stanford Cardinal fans used to watching Andrew Luck hand the ball off to Heisman runner-up Toby Gerhar last seasont got to see an air attack in the first half of Stanford’s dominating win over Sacramento State, 52-17.
Luck, a redshirt sophomore, led the Cardinal to a 38-7 halftime lead by completing 14 of 18 passes in the first half for 301 yards and four touchdowns. He tacked on just 15 more yards in the second half, after the game was well out of reach.
Luck’s main target was Doug Baldwin, who had four catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns, including one that went for 81 yards. In the second half, Stanford featured the running attack, racking up 214 yards on the ground, with three running backs scoring touchdowns.
Sacramento State switched quarterbacks after starter McLeod Bethel-Thompson threw for just 76 yards in the first half, but the backup Jeff Fleming wasn’t much better against Stanford’s new look 4-3 defense. He completed just five passes in the second half for 36 yards, as the Hornets managed only 171 yards of offense, compared to Stanford’s 530.
