Ryan Mallett threw for three touchdowns, two to Joe Adams, and No. 19 Arkansas crushed visiting Tennessee Tech 44-3 in the season opener Saturday.
Mallett, a Heisman Trophy candidate, was 21-of-24 for 301 yards. He threw touchdown passes of 85 and 15 yards to Adams, who had six catches for 137 yards. Mallett also had a 3-yard touchdown pass to Cobi Hamilton.
Dennis Johnson had 60 yards rushing and scored on a 7-yard run. Broderick Green had a 1-yard touchdown run as Arkansas took a 23-0 lead at halftime.
The Razorbacks averaged 36 points, tops in the SEC last season. They surpassed that mark midway through the third quarter.
Ronnie Wingo scored on a 10-yard run early in the third, and Hamilton's score made it 37-3 with 5:49 left in the third quarter.
Arkansas rolled up 519 yards against the Golden Eagles of the Ohio Valley Conference in the teams’ first meeting.
