Stampeders 21, Lions 16: Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 283 yards and a touchdown as visiting Calgary held on to clinch a home playoff game next week by knocking off BC.
Mitchell completed 20-of-38 passes with one interception for the Stampeders (12-6), who sealed the win with a Dexter McCoil interception in the final minute and will host Winnipeg in the West Division semifinal on Nov. 10. Hergy Mayala gained 103 yards on five receptions with a touchdown for Calgary, which has won 12 of the last 14 meetings with the Lions.
Brandon Bridge went 14-of-22 through the air for 194 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted twice while Danny O'Brien had 60 yards passing along with a rushing TD for BC (5-13), which finished 0-10 against West Division foes. Bryan Burnham hauled in seven passes to reach 100 on the season for the first time in his career and finished with 91 yards receiving along with the score as the Lions ended up 3-6 at home.
Rene Paredes split the uprights from 28 yards to open the scoring, the Stampeders added a safety and Paredes connected from 41 yards for a 8-0 lead after one quarter. Sergio Castillo got the Lions on the scoreboard with a 34-yard kick early in the second quarter, but Paredes responded with field goals from 44 and 25 yards to give Calgary a 14-3 edge at intermission.
The Stampeders punted twice before BC put together an eight-play drive, including a successful fake punt, that ended with a 1-yard sneak by O'Brien that pulled the Lions within four going into the final quarter. Mitchell increased the lead to 11 after throwing a 9-yard scoring strike the Mayala with 2:52 to go and BC stayed alive with Bridge's 17-yard TD pass to Burnham just 68 seconds later, but Calgary hung on from there.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Mitchell has thrown at least one touchdown pass in his last 15 contests. … BC RB John White ran for 44 yards Saturday to reach 1,000 in a season for the first time in his career (1,004). … Calgary WR Reggie Begelton had six receptions against BC to go over 100 for the first time (102). … The Lions will miss the playoffs for just the second time since 1996. … Calgary DL Cordarro Law, WR Eric Rogers, DB Tre Roberson and DB Royce Metchie were all held out of the regular-season finale.
