Redblacks 32, Stampeders 28: Dominique Davis threw for 276 yards and ran for three touchdowns, including the go-ahead score with 1:15 remaining in the fourth quarter, as visiting Ottawa fought back from a double-digit deficit to stun Calgary in its season opener.
Davis overcame four interceptions and completed 29-of-44 passes to lead the Redblacks to their first-ever win in Calgary. Mossis Madu racked up 112 yards on 24 carries and R.J. Harris caught six passes for 82 yards as Ottawa avenged a 27-16 loss to the Stampeders in the 2018 Grey Cup.
Bo Levi Mitchell was 23-of-39 for 275 yards and a touchdown for Calgary, which had won its previous seven season openers at home. Juwan Brescacin made four catches for 68 yards and a TD while Don Jackson ran for a score for the Stampeders, who led by 10 points midway through the third quarter.
Tre Roberson picked off a pass deep in Ottawa territory to set up Jackson's 1-yard touchdown plunge before Davis scored on a quarterback sneak to pull the Redblacks within 7-6 following a failed 2-point conversion. A 50-yard TD catch by Brescacin after Roberson's second interception and pair of field goals by Rene Paredes (17 and 42 yards) stretched the Stampeders' advantage to 21-6, but Davis added another 1-yard touchdown run and Lewis Ward drilled a 44-yard kick as time expired in the second quarter to trim the deficit to four.
Brandon Smith returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown to put Calgary on top 28-18 before Ward converted a 26-yard field goal with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter as Ottawa crept within seven. De'Andre Montgomery recovered a fumble in the red zone, but the Redblacks had to settle for a 30-yarder by Ward before Davis' outstretched arm broke the plane of the goal line for a 5-yard touchdown that completed the comeback.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Mitchell moved past the legendary Russ Jackson (24,593) for 20th place on the CFL's all-time passing list with 24,748 yards. … Calgary lost DLs Junior Turner (knee) and Ese Mrabure (lower body) and RB Terry Williams (ankle) to injuries. … Ottawa WR Brad Sinopoli, who led the CFL with 116 receptions last season, caught seven passes for 75 yards.
