Brandon Childress poured in 20 points, and Olivier Sarr scored 14 points, including a big bucket down the stretch, as Wake Forest saw a late-game lead disappear before recovering to defeat Notre Dame 75-68 on Tuesday night in South Bend, Ind.

Jaylen Hoard's basket put Wake Forest ahead 68-66 with 2:43 to play as Notre Dame was amid a stretch of more than two minutes without scoring after pulling even.

Sarr's basket with 1:06 to go pushed Wake Forest to a four-point lead. That helped the Demon Deacons gain their first victory in South Bend in four all-time visits.

Notre Dame was held without a field goal in the final 5:06.

Hoard added 10 points for Wake Forest (10-15, 3-10 Atlantic Coast Conference), which recorded a season-high 19 assists.

Childress was shut out on 0-for-12 shooting from the field Saturday against eighth-ranked North Carolina. That contributed the Demon Deacons' 38-point setback.

Against Notre Dame, Childress was 5-for-7 from the floor -- all on 3-point attempts.

TJ Gibbs posted 23 points, John Mooney had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Prentiss Hubb added 11 points and nine assists for Notre Dame (13-13, 3-10). The Irish were coming off a solid showing Saturday in a 60-54 road loss at national power Virginia, but they couldn't build on that.

Childress hit a 3-pointer as part of a 5-0 spurt that gave Wake Forest a 66-57 lead with less than six minutes to play.

About three minutes later, it was 66-66 after the Irish scored nine straight points. A pair of missed free throws in a 40-second span prevented Notre Dame from going ahead before Wake Forest got back on track.

Earlier, Wake Forest scored the final six points of the first half to cut its deficit to 36-35.

Before that last spurt, the Irish had shot 63.6 percent from the field to create the early edge.

The contest was the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season.
