WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- For the first 10 minutes of his 449th game as a head coach, it looked as if Purdue coach Matt Painter would be on the wrong side of an upset -- not celebrating a coaching milestone.

Instead, Carsen Edwards' career-high 27 points helped No. 21 Purdue overcome an early deficit and cruise past IUPUI 86-61 in a nonconference game Sunday, marking Painter's 300th career victory.

Painter became one of 10 active head coaches to reach 300 victories within 14 seasons and improved to 275-144 at Purdue.

"It's huge," Vince Edwards said of Painter's milestone. "Having a head coach like that of his caliber, and doing what he's done for this program since taking over, to get that win for him is big time."

The Boilermakers (10-2) continued their recent trend of struggling to open games, trailing 19-10 near the 10-minute mark of the first half following a 12-0 run by the Jaguars.

"We played hard in the first half, we just had some balls poked loose and stuff like that, but we just came out the same way in the second half," Carsen Edwards said. "Just played hard, try to get stops, and we were able to get on a run."

IUPUI (2-6) took advantage of Purdue's early mistakes, converting eight first-half turnovers into 13 points, but could not sustain any momentum once the Boilermakers found their rhythm.

Vince Edwards' jumper with 7:49 remaining in the first half gave the Boilermakers a 22-21 lead, and a 3-pointer at the buzzer by P.J. Thompson lifted Purdue to a 40-31 halftime lead. Thompson finished with three points and a team-high six assists.

Vince Edwards had 12 points and 12 rebounds, his eighth career double-double.

"Just not come out sluggish," Vince Edwards said of Purdue's slow starts. "That was just one thing we did, honestly. We've just got to come out and have energy. Against good teams, that's going to get us beat. We're not going to win the Big Ten or be where we want to be (starting slow) so we've just got to come out better."

The Boilermakers closed the first half on a 12-4 run despite shooting 3 of 13 from 3-point range in the half.

Purdue picked up where it left off in the second half, opening on a 14-0 run and essentially putting the game out of reach by the first media timeout.

Carsen Edwards shot 11-of-17 from the field, and scored seven of Purdue's 14 points to begin the second half.

"We really want to look for him to drive," Painter said of Carsen Edwards. "Try to get it in transition, get out in space, be able to drive the basketball and get to the rim, and not settle for jump shots. Kind of let the game come to him, but just look to attack. I thought tonight he was great at attacking."

Maurice Kirby led the Jaguars with 16 points and four rebounds, shooting 8 of 12 from the field. Jaylen Minnett had 12 points and T.J. Henderson added 10, but the Jaguars were unable to establish a consistent inside threat, as Purdue outscored them 36-26 in the paint.

Isaac Haas scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Boilermakers, shooting 6 of 7 from the field. Haas has reached double figures in Purdue's last four games, and he was named Big Ten Player of the Week last week following back-to-back 20-point performances.

Purdue's size advantage forced the Jaguars to send inside scorers to the free-throw line, particularly in the first half. The Boilermakers reached the bonus with several minutes remaining in the first half, and converted on 16 of 17 free-throw attempts in the game overall.
