Wake Forest reserve guard Brandon Childress scored seven points during a second-half stretch after visiting Coastal Carolina made a run, helping the Demon Deacons withstand a challenge in an 86-74 victory Wednesday night at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Forward John Collins scored 20 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while Childress finished with 15 points for Wake Forest (5-1).

Guards Mitch Wilbekin and Bryant Crawford added 14 and 12 points, respectively, as the Demon Deacons improved to 3-0 in home games.

Guard Elijah Wilson's 20 points led five Coastal Carolina players in double figures. The others were forward Demario Beck (13), guard Colton Ray-St. Cyr (12), guard Jaylen Shaw (10) and forward Joseph Williams-Powell (10).

Wake Forest shot 47.4 percent from the field, ending a string of four games in a row at 50 percent or better. That was the longest such stretch for the Demon Deacons in a dozen years.

Coastal Carolina (2-4) began the second half on a 17-7 run to close within 44-40, but part of the response came with Childress' 3-pointer and his four free throws.

Wake Forest, which also defeated Coastal Carolina last season, led 37-23 at halftime despite 2-for-9 shooting on 3-pointers from its starters.

Wake Forest reserves accounted for 15 first-half points, with eight of those coming from Childress.

Coastal Carolina shot 28.1 percent from the field and committed nine turnovers in the first half. The Chanticleers had only three turnovers after halftime.
