Miami trailed for the first time this season but managed to shake off pesky Penn in the second half for a 74-62 victory Saturday at Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes (3-0) put five players in double figures with guard Ja'Quan Newton leading the way with 18 points. Freshman forward A.J. Brodeur led the Quakers (1-1) with 16.

Penn managed to slow the pace early with a version of a 1-3-1 zone defense that held Miami to a season-low 45.2 shooting percentage for the game. But the Quakers wasted opportunities at the other end by turning the ball over over 21 times.

The turnovers helped the Hurricanes pull away from a five-point halftime lead and maintain double-digit margins for the final 14 minutes. Their biggest lead was 23 points, 63-40.

The Quakers went on an 8-0 run after Miami scored the first four points of the game to take an early lead. Later it was tied at 13-13 and 15-15 before forward Dewan Huell gave the Hurricanes the lead for good at 17-15 on the second of his three consecutive dunk follows.

Miami went to the locker room at the halftime break up 28-23 thanks to a couple of quick baskets by guard Davon Reed in the final couple of minutes of the period.

Neither team shot the ball well over the first 20 minutes.

Penn was 9-of-28 for 32.1 percent, Miami 12-of-36 for 33.3. Both teams caught fire in the second half with Penn going 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) and Miami 16-of-26 (61.5) the final 20 minutes.

Miami was without starting center Ebuku Izundu, out with a "lower left extremity" injury.
