HONOLULU -- Junior guard James Blackmon scored 26 points and sophomore center Thomas Bryant added 19 points and 10 rebounds Friday to lead No. 11 Indiana past No. 3 Kansas 103-99 in overtime at Stan Sheriff Center.

Blackmon, who missed the final 22 games of last season after undergoing major knee surgery, was clutch at the foul line and added four of the 15 3-pointers the Hoosiers made.

While the loss of All-Big Ten point guard Yogi Ferrell was considered a concern for Indiana, the Hoosiers responded behind the frontcourt tandem of Blackmon and Bryant. Especially since the Hoosiers gained a 50-35 command of the boards.

Senior guard Frank Mason scored a career-best 30 points to lead Kansas.

He took over late in the game to lead a gallant comeback by Kansas before fouling out with 16 seconds left in overtime.

Mason added seven rebounds and nine assists, also team highs, and led the improbable comeback bid after the Hoosiers had an opportunity to go up by seven with just over one minute to play in regulation.

A driving bucket by Mason tied the game, 87-87, with 39.9 seconds left, but he missed a free throw and a chance to convert a three-point play. Still, he made two more free throws with 2.3 seconds left to send the game into overtime tied 89-89.

The game was tied 16 times and also included 17 lead changes, though the Hoosiers used back-to-back 3s from Blackmon and freshman guard Curtis Jones to gain the lead for keeps in overtime.

The Jayhawks saw a 14-game win streak in season openers snapped, though junior guard Devonte' Graham added 16 points before fouling out late in regulation.

Both teams had five scorers net double figures.

The first eight shots Indiana attempted were from 3-point range. The Hoosiers canned four of those to take a 12-9 lead, but Kansas responded by going 16 of 20 from the foul line in the first half.

The Jayhawks' tandem of small guards, Mason and Graham, scored 11 and 10 first-half points, respectively, to help provide a 46-42 lead at the break.

An 11-0 spurt, which included four points from Mason, enabled Kansas to grab a 40-33 margin.

Bryant scored five on Indiana's last nine points of the half and had 16 at the break. Anunoby added 10 points, though the Hoosiers could not add many 3-point goals, going 6 of 16 for the half. Indiana also managed just eight second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds.

NOTES: Kansas senior F Landen Lucas wore a walking boot to protect a tender foot while touring Pearl Harbor with his teammates on Wednesday. Coach Bill Self, however, said before the game against Indiana: "We're not going to limit him in any way ... and hopefully he'll feel fine after that." ... Kansas sophomore F Carlton Bragg started against Indiana after coming off the bench in the Jayhawks' final exhibition game. He scored just two points before fouling out of that game against Division II Emporia State. ... No. 3 Kansas marked the highest-ranked team Indiana has played in a season opener since 1975. That season, the Hoosiers beat No. 2 UCLA to begin the last undefeated season by a Division I basketball team. ... The Hawaii trip was the second in as many seasons for both teams. Each played last year in the Maui Invitational. Kansas won that event, while Indiana went 1-2. ... Indiana coach Tom Crean said before the game that the Hoosiers would be interested in arranging a series with Kansas. He also mentioned Kentucky as a possibility, while noting scheduling conflicts created by different commitments. The opener was the first meeting between Indiana and Kansas in 21 years.
