Junior forward Tyler Cavanaugh posted 22 points and 12 rebounds, helping fourth-seeded George Washington upset top-seeded Monmouth 87-71 in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament on Monday night at the Multipurpose Activity Center in West Long Branch, N.J.

Senior guard Patricio Garino and senior forward Kevin Larsen scored 19 points apiece for George Washington (25-10), which will play second-seeded Florida in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Senior guard Joe McDonald scored 16 points.

Freshman guard Micah Seaborn scored 24 points for Monmouth (28-8). Junior guard Je'lon Hornbeak had 14 points. Senior guard Deon Jones added 11 points and nine rebounds.

George Washington started the game with a 7-0 run and went up 14-4 on a 3-pointer by Garino. The Colonials led 29-19 with 4:32 to play in the opening period, but Monmouth mounted a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to three on a layup by Seaborn.

The Colonials led 37-33 at the break. The Hawks cut the deficit to one early in the second half, but a 12-3 run gave George Washington a 49-39 advantage. The Hawks made one more charge to get within five, but the Colonials pulled away to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.
