Duke 68, San Diego State 49: Jahlil Okafor scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half and added three blocks as the Blue Devils routed the Aztecs in the round of 32 of the NCAA Tournament in Charlotte, N.C.

Fellow freshman Justise Winslow contributed 13 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks for top-seeded Duke (31-4), which will meet fifth-seeded Utah in Houston on Friday. Quinn Cook nailed three 3-pointers en route to 15 points as the Blue Devils shot 54.5 percent from the floor – the 18th time they have converted at least half of their field goals.

Winston Shepard finished with 13 points for No. 8 seed San Diego State (27-9), which shot 32.8 percent from the field – including 2-of-13 beyond the arc. J.J. O'Brien chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and two steals as the Aztecs scored fewer than 50 points for the fifth time this season.

Okafor scored six of his team’s first 10 points as Duke raced out to a 15-4 advantage, and tallied 10 of his team’s 15 points over a 6 1/2-minute span to stretch the Blue Devils’ lead to 35-17 late in the first half. Shepard countered with seven straight spanning both halves to keep San Diego State within striking distance before the Aztecs got two 3-pointers from Malik Pope to trim the deficit to 44-37 with 12:45 left.

Duke answered with an 11-0 run over the next six minutes – sparked by a triple from Cook and a dunk from Winslow – until Aqeel Quinn stopped the surge with a pair of free throws with 6:43 remaining. Matt Jones drained a 3-pointer on the other end, Cook converted an uncontested layup following a steal from Winslow and Okafor contributed two more buckets at the rim as the margin swelled to 64-39 with less than four minutes to go.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and San Diego State’s Steve Fisher faced off for the first time in the NCAA Tournament since Krzyzewski’s Blue Devils beat Fisher’s “Fab Five” squad at Michigan in the 1992 national championship. The 23-year gap between tournament meetings was the longest gap for head coaches in NCAA history. … Okafor’s 47 points through two NCAA Tournament games are the highest total amassed by a Duke freshman. … The Blue Devils have advanced to the Sweet 16 each of the 13 times they have earned a No. 1 seed.
