No. 3 Virginia 51, North Carolina State 47: Malcolm Brogdon scored 15 points and the visiting Cavaliers survived in their first game without injured leading scorer Justin Anderson.

Virginia (22-1, 10-1 ACC), which lost Anderson to a fractured finger in Saturday’s victory over Louisville, shot just 37.3 percent from the field, went 2-of-11 from 3-point range and made 11-of-18 free throws. Mike Tobey scored seven of his 11 points in the final five minutes while Anthony Gill contributed nine points and 11 rebounds off the bench as the Cavaliers won their third in a row.

Trevor Lacey scored 14 points to lead North Carolina State (14-11, 5-7), which did not fare much better offensively by shooting 33.3 percent from the field and 3-of-17 beyond the arc in losing for the fifth time in six games. Anthony Barber added 11 points while Beejay Anya recorded five of the Wolfpack’s nine blocked shots.

N.C. State trailed by five points with less than seven minutes left, but rallied to pull within 43-42 on Lacey’s basket with just over two minutes remaining. Tobey’s dunk and two Brogdon free throws reestablished the five-point cushion with 48 seconds to go, but Lacey’s 3-pointer brought the Wolfpack within 47-45 before Tobey and Brogdon each hit a pair of free throws in the final seven seconds.

Virginia led 15-13 with 8 ½ minutes left in the first half but missed eight of its final 10 shots as N.C. State led 21-19 at halftime. Neither team led by more than two points for the first 13 minutes of the second half before the Cavaliers scored seven unanswered points, getting a Gill three-point play and Devon Hall’s layup with 6 ½ minutes left to go ahead 38-33.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cavaliers came in shooting 37.8 percent from 3-point range but have struggled of late, going 12-of-50 in their past four games. … N.C. State F Kyle Washington finished with six rebounds and three blocked shots, but Virginia outrebounded the Wolfpack 43-31. … Tobey finished with nine boards, three on the offensive end.
