No. 16 Maryland 64, Penn State 58: Dez Wells scored 23 points and Jon Graham added a career-high 16 points as the host Terrapins won for the fifth time in seven games.

Wells finished 8-of-10 from the field, helping Maryland (19-4, 7-3 Big Ten) offset a four-point performance from leading scorer Melo Trimble, who did contribute a career-high eight assists. Jake Layman added 10 points as the Terrapins prevailed despite shooting 3-of-15 from 3-point range and 15-of-24 from the free-throw line.

D.J. Newbill scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half on 6-of-19 shooting and added seven rebounds for Penn State (14-9, 2-8), which was outscored 12-6 in the final five minutes. Geno Thorpe added 10 points and Brandon Taylor scored nine.

Neither team led by more than four points in a tightly contested first half with Maryland using baskets by Layman and Wells in the final minute to take a 29-28 lead into intermission. Wells’ 3-pointer capped a 7-0 spurt early in the second half to put Maryland ahead 39-31, but Shep Garner scored six straight points for Penn State and Devin Foster’s basket with 9:48 to go put the Nittany Lions ahead 47-46.

Foster’s layup with five minutes left evened the score at 52, but Trimble found Layman and Dodd on back-to-back possessions to push Maryland ahead 57-52 with 2:15 to play. Taylor answered for Penn State with two 3-pointers, the last with 1:02 left to cut the Terrapins’ lead to 59-58 before Wells hit 3-of-4 free throws and Trimble added two from the line in the final 40 seconds.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Wells had hit just 19-of-56 shots from the field in his previous five games. … Trimble finished 0-of-5 from the field and is 0-of-13 in his past two games after scoring 61 points in his previous three contests. … Newbill made his first three shots in the game’s opening six minutes, then missed his next six attempts before hitting a 3-pointer with 15:26 to play.
