Rakeem Christmas led the way with 23 points, eight rebounds and two blocks for Syracuse (14-6, 5-2), which lost for only the second time in 13 games at home. Trevor Cooney had 14 points, but his potential game-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds missed the mark, while Tyler Roberson added 10 points and 14 boards for the Orange.

Reed drained 3-pointers to start and end a 13-4 burst that opened the second half as the Hurricanes jumped back in front by nine.

The Orange later ran off 17 of the next 24 points – eight by Christmas – to pull within 54-52 on Ron Patterson’s 3-pointer with just under six minutes to go. Christmas’ basket brought Syracuse within 60-59 while Manu Lecomte and Cooney traded 3-pointers on each team’s next possession, but Rodriguez hit two free throws with 11.2 seconds to go before Cooney’s miss.
