Virginia 78, Memphis 60: Joe Harris scored 16 points as the Cavaliers enjoyed an offensive explosion to accompany their typical defensive excellence in an NCAA tournament round of 32 victory in Raleigh, N.C.

Top-seeded Virginia (30-6) shot 55.6 percent and knocked down 5-of-11 3-pointers in advancing to face No. 4 Michigan State in a East regional showdown on Friday at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Anthony Gill chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks off the bench for the Cavaliers, who will be appearing in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1995.

Memphis' four senior guards combined to shoot 9-of-28, as the team still has not reached the Sweet 16 since 2009. Austin Nichols had a team-high 15 points for the eighth-seeded Tigers (24-10), who shot poorly from the field (40.7 percent) and the arc (3-of-13), not to mention a 9-of-21 effort from the foul line.

Virginia shot 56 percent in the first half and led 35-20 at the break thanks to a closing 16-2 run, which featured back-to-back 3s by Harris and London Perrantes. The Cavaliers were never seriously threatened in the second half as their lead got down to 15 with about 15 minutes left, but Mike Tobey's layup ignited a quick 6-0 run and Virginia cruised from there.

Tobey added 11 points and two blocks for the Cavaliers, while Malcolm Brogdon had 10 points and four assists, as did Justin Anderson. Geron Johnson recorded 11 points for the Tigers, who also received seven points, six boards, four assists and two blocks from Shaq Goodwin.
