Virginia 70, Coastal Carolina 59: Anthony Gill scored 17 points and Evan Nolte sparked a second-half rally as the top-seed Cavaliers overcame a halftime deficit in the second round of the NCAA tournament in Raleigh, N.C.

Virginia (29-6), the East regional’s No. 1 seed, got 14 points from Malcolm Brogdon and used an 18-5 second-half spurt to dash the upset hopes of No. 16 seed Coastal Carolina (21-13). Nolte came off the bench to score eight consecutive points during the decisive run as the Cavaliers advanced to face No. 8 seed Memphis on Sunday.

Badou Diagne scored 14 points to lead Coastal Carolina, which led 35-30 at halftime but were outscored 40-24 in the second half. Leading scorer Elijah Wilson scored just six points on 2-of-13 shooting in the Chanticleers’ first NCAA tournament appearance since 1993.

Wilson’s 3-pointer tied the game at 47 with just under nine minutes to play, but after London Perrantes hit three free throws, Nolte scored all eight of his points on two 3-pointers and a jumper to give the Cavaliers a 58-50 advantage with 5:47 remaining. Joe Harris’ 3-pointer two minutes later pushed the Virginia advantage to 65-52.

Eric Smith hit two 3-pointers during a 17-4 first-half run that put the Chanticleers ahead 31-21 with four minutes remaining before intermission. Virginia closed within 35-30 at the break and opened the second half on a 12-3 run, using 3-pointers from Brogdon and Harris to move ahead 42-38.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Chanticleers shot 52 percent in the first half, hitting 5-of-10 3-point attempts. … Nolte, a sophomore averaging 2.5 points, had scored nine points in his previous eight games. … Virginia finished 20-for-25 from the free-throw line; Coastal Carolina shot 8-for-14.
