No. 20 New Mexico 64, No. 7 San Diego State 58: Cameron Bairstow had 17 points and nine rebounds and Kendall Williams scored 16 points as the Lobos defeated the Aztecs to claim the Mountain West tournament title in Las Vegas.

Hugh Greenwood added 12 points for second-seeded New Mexico (27-6), which defeated San Diego State for the second time in three meetings this season. Alex Kirk grabbed 11 rebounds to go with eight points as the Lobos won for the ninth time in 10 games.

Xavier Thames scored 15 points and Dwayne Polee II added 14 for the top-seeded Aztecs (29-4), who had a six-game winning streak halted. Winston Shepard contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and three steals and Skylar Spencer grabbed 10 rebounds for San Diego State, which missed nine of 22 free throws and shot just 35.7 percent from the field.

New Mexico held a 56-49 lead with 2:34 remaining before Shepard scored on a tip-in, Thames drained a 3-pointer and Polee converted a three-point play to give the Aztecs a 57-56 lead with 1:21 to play. Bairstow answered with a three-point play six seconds later and Williams connected on a 3-pointer to give the Lobos a five-point lead with 24.4 seconds to play as New Mexico prevailed.

The Lobos led 27-22 at halftime before San Diego State rolled off the first eight points of the second half. The Aztecs led 41-38 midway through the half after four straight points by Shepard before New Mexico went on an 11-2 burst to take a six-point lead with 6:09 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Lobos have won three consecutive Mountain West tournament titles with two of the victories coming against the Aztecs. … Shepard was just 4-of-15 from the field and is just 6-of-26 over the past two games. … Kirk (1,007) became the 32nd player in New Mexico history to top 1,000 career points.
