No. 5 Syracuse 57, Maryland 55: Tyler Ennis scored 20 points and the visiting Orange survived a late run by the Terrapins to snap a two-game slide.

C.J. Fair collected 17 points and nine rebounds for Syracuse (26-2, 13-2 ACC), which pulled within a game of first-place Virginia in advance of a visit to Charlottesville on Saturday. Trevor Cooney added nine points on 3-of-13 shooting as the Orange survived despite falling shy of the 60-point mark for the fifth time in six games.

Seth Allen led Maryland (15-13, 7-8) with 22 points - including six 3-pointers - but missed an off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Terrapins lost to a ranked opponent by two points for the second time in three games. Dez Wells contributed 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The Orange had a 12-point lead on multiple occasions in the second half, the last time coming when Ennis scored to make it 51-39 with 5:45 left, but Jake Layman's 3-pointer highlighted an 8-0 run for Maryland and Allen had five straight Terrapins points to get the hosts within 56-52 with 1:42 left. Layman split two free throws after a steal to make it 56-55 with 47 seconds to go but Nick Faust missed a potential go-ahead shot with seven seconds left and Allen was off at the buzzer.

Cooney hit two early 3-pointers as Syracuse raced to an 18-8 lead and Ennis hit another in the closing seconds of the first half to make it 32-24 at the break. Wells had consecutive hoops early in the second half to get the Terrapins within six before Ennis scored seven straight points for the Orange, who built a 42-30 lead midway through the stanza.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Cooney made 1-of-2 free throws in the closing seconds to finish a 3-of-6 effort at the line for Syracuse, compared to 19-of-27 for Maryland. ... Layman was 1-for-6 from the floor and Faust missed all six of his shots as the Terrapins shot 35 percent. ... Maryland has lost four games against ranked opponents in the last month by an average of four points.
