Maryland 74, Miami (Fla.) 71: Dez Wells scored a team-high 21 points, including a 3-pointer with 5.9 seconds left, as the Terrapins edged the visiting Hurricanes.

After Miami scored 10 straight to tie the game, Wells got the ball at the top of the key before draining the winning shot - capping off a 7-for-7 performance from the field, not to mention 6-of-6 from the line - and the Hurricanes could not answer. Evan Smotrycz and Jake Layman each added 15 points for Maryland (12-9, 4-4 ACC), which made 10-of-21 from 3-point range.

Rion Brown led the way with 25 points while Manu Lecomte had a career-high 19 for Miami (10-10, 2-6), which made 9-of-21 from behind the 3-point arc. Garrius Adams chipped in with 12 points and Donnavan Kirk added nine points and nine rebounds for the Hurricanes.

Nick Faust’s 3-pointer put the Terps ahead 59-56 with just under seven minutes left and Wells scored 10 of Maryland’s next 12 for a 10-point lead. Brown responded with eight of the next 10 points, including a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left to forge a tie and set up Wells’ winner.

The lead changed hands seven times in the first half and Seth Allen’s driving layup in the final seconds gave Maryland a 30-29 edge at intermission. Smotrycz keyed an early second-half surge as Maryland led by eight before Miami’s Davon Reed scored the final six in a 10-2 run to tie the game at 50.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Maryland’s Mark Turgeon coached his 500th career game - 91 with the Terps - and boasts a 304-196 record overall at four schools combined. … Miami was without F James Kelly, who averages 7.7 points and 4.4 rebounds, due to an ankle injury he sustained in the loss to Syracuse on Saturday. … Maryland is 12-0 when leading with five minutes to go and 9-1 when in front at halftime.
