USC 77, California 69: Freshman Nikola Jovanovic scored a career-high 23 points and Byron Wesley added 14 points and seven rebounds as the Trojans handed the visiting Golden Bears their first Pac-12 loss.

Pe'Shon Howard chipped in 12 points, 10 assists and six rebounds for USC (10-9, 1-5 Pac-12), which shot 51.9 percent and stunned the Golden Bears after losing its first five league games by an average of 22.4 points. Julian Jacobs contributed 12 points to help the Trojans snap a four-game losing streak against California.

Justin Cobbs led California (14-5, 5-1) with 22 points and Jordan Mathews had 18. Richard Solomon collected nine points and 13 rebounds before fouling out in the final two minutes for the Golden Bears, who shot 39.3 percent and had their six-game winning streak come to an end.

USC, which was outrebounded by 20 in Saturday’s 83-62 loss at Colorado, outscored California 24-8 in the paint in the first half and led 41-32 at the break. Jacobs shot 5-of-6 overall and scored with just under nine minutes remaining to put the Trojans ahead 64-49.

California’s Tyrone Wallace missed seven of his first eight shots before hitting a 3-pointer with 1:37 left to cut the deficit to 73-66, but the Trojans converted their final four free throws to secure their first Pac-12 win under first-year coach Andy Enfield. The Golden Bears shot 16-of-25 from the foul line and dropped out of a first-place tie with top-ranked Arizona.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Mathews and Cobbs shot a combined 12-of-29 while the rest of the team missed 20 of its 32 shots from the field. … USC, which entered the game with a Pac-12-worst rebounding margin of minus-5.2 in league play, won the battle of the boards 37-33. … Omar Oraby had nine points and seven rebounds for the Trojans, who outscored California 44-26 in the paint.
