Miami (Fla.) 71, Loyola (Md.) 48: Rion Brown recorded 17 points, nine rebounds and three steals as the Hurricanes pulled away from the visiting Greyhounds for their third consecutive victory.

Donnavan Kirk chipped in with 12 points and nine boards while James Kelly scored 11 for Miami (8-5), which shot 54.2 percent from the field. Tonye Jekiri scored in double figures for the first time in his career, adding 10 points for the Hurricanes.

Eric Laster drained three 3-pointers and led the way with 13 points for Loyola (5-6), which started the season with four straight wins. Dylon Cormier, who was averaging 24.1 points for the Greyhounds coming into the game, was held to 11 on 4-of-12 shooting.

Miami scored 14 of the game’s first 15 points, weathered a 10-0 run by Loyola and then continued to pull away for a 43-20 lead at intermission. Brown and Kelly each recorded 11 points in the first half as the Hurricanes made 15-of-25 from the field – 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

The Hurricanes pushed the lead to 49-22 after a Kirk basket a little over five minutes into the second half and they were on their way to improving their home record to 4-3. Freshman Davon Reed added eight points and a season-best seven assists for Miami, which plays at No. 2 Syracuse on Saturday.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami G Garrius Adams played his 100th game for the Hurricanes, more than anyone else on the current roster except Brown (116), and scored four points. … Loyola is 11-36 all time against current ACC members with the last victory coming in 1949 against Wake Forest and met Miami for the first time. … The 43-point effort in the opening 20 minutes was one shy of Miami’s season high for a half -- against Texas Southern on Nov. 14.
