Tyrese Proctor and Dariq Whitehead poured in 15 points apiece and No. 15 Duke overpowered Maryland Eastern Shore for an 82-55 victory on a historic day for the Blue Devils on Saturday at Durham, N.C.
Duke sent out an all-freshman starting lineup for the first time in the storied program.
Kyle Filipowski scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Blue Devils (10-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) played without junior guard Jeremy Roach, who missed a game for the first time in his career. He sat out because of a toe injury. Whitehead made his first start, joining classmates Filipowski, Proctor, Mark Mitchell and Dereck Lively II in the starting unit.
This marked the final nonconference game for Duke, which will have a nine-day layoff before playing at Wake Forest. The Blue Devils, who were charged with a season-high 19 turnovers, went 6-0 in nonleague home games.
Troy Hupstead came off the bench and was the leading scorer for Maryland Eastern Shore (3-7) with 12 points. Zion Styles had 11 points, and Da'Shawn Phillip finished with 10 points.
A 17-11 stretch in Duke's favor before the halfway juncture of the second half eliminated any doubt about the outcome.
Filipowski, who has reached double figures in all 12 of his college games, scored 12 points in the last 5 1/2 minutes of the first half. The Blue Devils were up 39-21 at the break.
It was a rather unremarkable opening half for Duke, which shot 48.5 percent from the field and made only three of its nine 3-point shots. A 20-10 rebounding advantage worked in its favor.
Duke didn't score on its first four possessions, but an 11-0 run resulted in a Maryland Eastern Shore timeout. Later, the Blue Devils put together a 12-0 spurt.
The Hawks committed 13 first-half turnovers and didn't attempt a free throw until nearly the midway mark of the second half. Those were the team's only two foul shots of the game.
