No. 17 Maryland built a big lead and then had to hang on for a 57-50 Big Ten win on Saturday afternoon at College Park, Md.

Jalen Smith had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Terrapins (14-4, 4-3 Big Ten), as they snapped a two-game skid. Freshman Donta Scott chipped in a career-high 13 points and Aaron Wiggins added 12, and Maryland never trailed.

Nojel Eastern had 14 points for Purdue (10-8, 3-4).

The Boilermakers sliced what was once an 18-point lead down to 53-50 with 3:53 to play on three free throws from Sasha Stefanovic, but couldn't get closer, unable to muster a field goal in the final six minutes, and scoring just those three free throws over that span.

Following Stefanovic's free throws, Smith, on his way to his ninth double-double, dunked on a feed from Wiggins at 2:06 to make it 55-50.

The Boilermakers used a 13-6 run early in the second half to whittle Maryland's lead to 44-37 at 11:36 on a layup by Eastern. The Terrapins answered with a Wiggins dunk and pushed the lead back to 11 points before the next Purdue charge.

The Boilermakers have lost three of their last four and fell to 1-5 on the road this year, including 0-4 in Big Ten play.

The Terrapins stormed out to a 16-point lead in the opening minutes, hitting five of their first seven 3-point attempts. When Wiggins hit a 3-pointer in transition at 12:50, Maryland's lead was 20-4.

Purdue trailed 36-20 at the half and was never closer than 14 points in the first half after the opening salvo, the last time at 1:21 when Trevion Williams scored inside to make it 34-20. Williams finished with eight points and seven rebounds battling Smith on the interior.

Maryland improved to 11-0 at home this season.

Purdue returns home to meet Illinois on Tuesday. The Terrapins go back on the road, still searching for their first road victory, when they meet Northwestern on Tuesday.
